2006 Greyhound Leadership Awards

November 11, 2006 (Cambridge, MA) -- Supporters of GREY2K USA gathered at the Elephant Walk restaurant to meet the GREY2K USA Board of Directors and honor this year’s leading advocates for greyhounds.

Senator Sheila Roberge of New Hampshire was named "Legislator of the Year" for her steadfast commitment to ending dog racing. The Senator sponsored legislation to require injury reporting by the state’s dog tracks last year, and this year helped win Senate approval for repeal of over $300,000 in annual subsidies previously benefiting Seabrook and Hinsdale Greyhound Parks.

Other award recipients present included:

  • Massachusetts Representative Carl Sciortino for sponsoring a bill to end dog racing in the Commonwealth and for his support of the Dog Protection Act;
  • New Hampshire Representative Steve Vaillancourt for his courageous floor speech against dog racing subsidies;
  • Massachusetts volunteers Lorraine Nicotera, Lorenz Duerr, Carolyn Roux, and Evelyn Kimber for their years of volunteering for GREY2K USA and the GREY2K USA Education Fund;
  • Kathy Pelton of Florida for her leadership in promoting our injury reporting law in her state; and
  • Attorney Kara Holmquist of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for her work in helping to draft the Dog Protection Act.

New Hampshire Senate President Teddy Gatsas, Massachusetts Representatives Mike Festa and Todd Smola were also award winners this year.
